The Origins of Park Life (Part I)
In the tumultuous year of 2020, when the world was gripped by the uncertainties of a global pandemic, friends and us embarked on a transformative journey across the United States. Against the backdrop of COVID-19 when most of the world, particularly cities, were closed - we were fueled by a collective longing for adventure and an insatiable wanderlust. What better time to see the country’s immense beauty, to hit the open road and explore what we never had before, and thus our road trip began. As we crisscrossed the vast landscapes and diverse terrains, we discovered not only the breathtaking beauty that our nation holds but also the resilience and spirit that define the American people. Little did we know at the time that this extraordinary expedition would become the genesis of "Park Life," an outdoor apparel company inspired by the very essence of our explorations. Join me as I recount the tales of our cross-country odyssey, where every twist of the road became a metaphor for the twists of fate that led to the birth of an iconic brand.
This blog will provide an introduction to the beginnings of Park Life, and over the coming weeks, will publish more stories of this unforgettable trip and the adventures that helped inspire a movement.
Planning a Road Trip
Planning a road trip requires a thoughtful blend of spontaneity and organization to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey. We start by outlining multiple routes, considering both the scenic and practical aspects of the adventure, while working within the amount of time we would be able to be away. With so many options of where to go and places to see, we planned multiple routes, starting from our hometown in New Jersey.
- Do we go coast to coast and see both the Atlantic and Pacific?
- Do we head south along the Appalachian trail and end the Bayou of Louisiana or the Everglades of Florida?
- If we head west to travel through the North across the Dakota’s and Idaho? Or go South through Texas and New Mexico?
We took into account the distance we aimed to cover each day, potential pit stops, and accommodations along the way. Investing time in researching attractions, landmarks, and hidden gems to explore en route, adding layers of excitement to the journey. We established a budget that covers fuel, accommodations, meals, and any planned activities, allowing for flexibility to accommodate unexpected detours or spontaneous discoveries. Lastly, we had to embrace the unexpected, as some of the most memorable moments often arise from unplanned deviations and spontaneous experiences along the open road.
The Route of a Lifetime
Finally, with all of our considerations debated and meticulously discussed, we embarked on the following route across the country for a 3 week period:
Indiana Dunes National Park: We started in New Jersey and headed west along Route 80, driving through the night in order to wake up in Indiana Dunes National Park where we spent our first day on the beach, enjoying the waters of Lake Michigan.
Sioux Falls: We continued our journey west, towards our next stop in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to take in the rich history of this
Badlands National Park: Our next stop was the Badlands National Park, a surreal lunar-like landscape, where rugged canyons, towering spires, and unique geological formations captivate. Here we rode horseback through the National Grasslands, shopped at the Wall Drug Store, hiked throughout the park to stunning vistas, and enjoyed our first ever boondocking camp at “The Wall” (more on this in another
Mount Rushmore & the Black Hills: What is a road trip out west without seeing the historic Mount Rushmore? We had to see the iconic granite faces of four U.S. presidents carved into the Black Hills of South Dakota. The patriotic grandeur of Mount Rushmore, set against a backdrop of lush forests, was a powerful and awe-inspiring testament to American history.
Yellowstone National Park: We ventured into the world's first national park, where geothermal wonders, such as Old Faithful, showcase the Earth's raw power. We encountered diverse wildlife, from bison to even grizzly bears, and witnessed the vivid colors of Grand Prismatic Spring. We rode on horseback into the back country where few tourists travel to spend a day in the remote paradise, trout fishing and exploring. We hiked and explored to see unique landscapes not viewable anywhere else in the world. With such an immense park, we could only see a portion in the few days we had, but knowing we would have to return for more.
Grand Tetons National Park: The jagged peaks of the Grand Tetons, which rise dramatically above pristine alpine lakes and lush valleys, was our next stop. We spent a few days hiking throughout the mountains, with our favorite stop being Delta Lake. The breathtaking scenery offered endless opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and capturing the perfect photograph. Here we let our adventure side take over when we white water rafted through the freezing Snake River!
Jackson Hole: Nestled in the embrace of the Grand Tetons, Jackson Hole is a charming mountain town that seamlessly blends outdoor adventure with a vibrant arts and culture scene. Here was a nice reprieve from the outdoor excursions offering the chance to stroll through the lively town square, shop, and eat at an amazing wild game restaurant.
Moab, Utah: A haven for outdoor enthusiasts, Moab beckoned with its red rock landscapes and thrilling recreational opportunities. With quick access to Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park, Moab served as the gateway to unforgettable adventures. Our highlight was renting four-wheeler UTVs and driving them off-roading to explore the area.
Arches National Park: An absolute surreal world where over 2,000 natural stone arches punctuate the red desert landscape. Arches National Park is a playground of geological wonders, featuring delicate arches, towering spires, and balanced rocks. With tons of hiking opportunities and history of explorers, this is an unforgettable Park.
Monument Valley: We surrendered to the iconic silhouette of Monument Valley, where colossal sandstone buttes and mesas rise majestically against the vast desert landscape. Best known for its featured scene in the movie Forrest Gump, the scenery is truly breathtaking. Our stay was capped off by viewing a comet in the night sky, with little natural light around it offered some of the best stargazing we ever saw!
Grand Canyon: Our next stop was the South Rim of the Grand Canyon where the National Park is located. The sheer magnitude of the Grand Canyon was a breathtaking masterpiece, which was carved by the Colorado River over millions of years. We stood on the rim to take in the vastness of this natural wonder. We ventured down below on the Havasupai Reservation with guides where we spent a day rafting on the Colorado River through the Canyon, which offered a completely different view from below compared to above. While on the River it rained multiple times and we got to see mini waterfalls form as water trickled down into the Canyon!
Horseshoe Bend: We took a quick pit stop at Horseshoe Bend - this Instagram friendly viewpoint is an iconic and picturesque scene where the Colorado River bends down below.
Lake Powell: A Shimmering oasis amidst the arid Southwest, Lake Powell's turquoise waters wind through towering sandstone canyons. Here we rented a boat for the day and explored the lake's numerous side canyons and simply relaxed on its sandy shores. We packed coolers full with food and drinks and enjoyed a relaxing day on the water, and even got to see the towering Hoover Damn by boat!
Scottsdale, Arizona: We ended our incredible journey in Scottsdale, Arizona. We took advantage of a hot shower and our first hotel stay the entire trip, which offered a wonderful return from slewing mats and cold showers on the road!
End of the Road, Beginning of a Lifetime
As the miles unfurled beneath our wheels, our road trip across the United States transcended the physical distances covered, weaving a tapestry of memories, experiences, and inspiration. The journey reached its poignant conclusion, not at a literal dead-end, but at a symbolic crossroads where the end of the road marked the inception of a lifetime of stories. Each stop, from the ethereal Badlands and the monumental faces of Mount Rushmore to the geothermal wonders of Yellowstone and the spiritual allure of Sedona, contributed to a narrative that extends far beyond the asphalt and into the realms of personal growth and discovery. Monument Valley's silent sentinels and the sheer grandeur of the Grand Canyon became the chapters of a tale that speaks not just of the places visited but of the transformation that occurs when one embraces the call of the open road.
The echoes of laughter, the awe at nature's wonders, and the camaraderie forged in the confines of an RV have become the foundation for what defines Park Life. With the road behind us, we stand at the threshold of a new adventure, a lifetime where the memories of this journey will forever be etched into the fabric of our existence.
